The sound recording
The master recording is the recorded performance delivered to streaming and download services. Music distribution primarily concerns this recording and the metadata connected to it.
The underlying composition
The composition is the song itself: its melody, lyrics and musical structure. Songwriters, composers and publishers may hold interests in these rights separately from the recording owner.
Publishing is not distribution
Publishing administration may involve composition registration, works administration and songwriter support where applicable. It should not be described as simply placing a recording on Spotify or another service.
Sync licensing connects music with visual media
Sync licensing concerns permission to use music with film, television, advertising and other audiovisual media. Relevant master and composition rights must be considered. Submission creates no promise of placement.
